Making It Programme - TheMusicWorks
Making It is a music-mentoring programme that empowers young people to believe in themselves, develop new skills, and make positive changes in their lives.
Who is it for?

The Making It programme acts as both a secondary and tertiary intervention. It is for:

  • young people aged 15–18 who are involved in, or at significant risk of entering, the criminal justice system
  • young people aged 9–12 who have been identified as being at risk of escalating behaviour and disengagement from services
How the Programme Works

Each young person works with a matched music mentor for 20 hours. Participants are supported through:

  • one‑to‑one music sessions with a music leader and mentor
  • Personalised mentoring and wellbeing support
  • Access to wider creative projects, events, work experience, and volunteering opportunities
  • Guidance and structured support to move into education, training, or employment

Our approach focuses on:

  • Increasing a young person’s sense of competence, autonomy and connection
  • Reducing risk factors linked to offending and anti‑social behaviour
  • Strengthening emotional wellbeing and a sense of belonging
  • Developing personal skills and creative expression
  • Supporting clear, positive progression routes away from the criminal justice system
  • For the younger age group, reducing the likelihood of later involvement in the criminal justice system
