Alternative Provision - TheMusicWorks
Our Alternative Provision Schools programme is designed to support KS2, KS3 and KS4 pupils who are at risk of further disengagement from education.

We use music as a vehicle to improve their confidence, skills, autonomy and provide meaningful connections with their music leaders and peers.

We provide safe, inclusive, and non-judgemental spaces where students can engage in music-based activity that places them at the centre of their experience. They get to make the music they want to make, in the way they want to make it.

Watch the video below of Chelsea, who attended Alternative Provision sessions at our Gloucester Hub, where she found a positive outlet through songwriting and music production, turning personal experiences into original rap lyrics.

Who is it for

APS is for KS2, KS3 and KS4 pupils who are at risk of exclusion, experiencing disengagement from education, or attending alternative provision settings.

What we deliver

We work in a youth-led way and what we deliver – and the outcomes we agree – depends on the needs of the school or setting. Typically, outcomes include increased confidence and self-worth, improved emotional wellbeing, personal and creative skills development, and work towards curriculum-linked accredited qualifications or Silver Arts Award.

How we work

We offer flexible delivery models including:

  • Group sessions at our Hub delivering music activity linked to the APS curriculum
  • Group work in alternative provision settings
  • One-to-one sessions in alternative provision settings or at our Hub space
  • Small group delivery in mainstream education with young people at risk of exclusion or escalating behaviour

Research shows that school exclusion significantly increases the risk of young people becoming involved in the criminal justice system, experiencing poor mental health, and further disengagement from education. Our intervention model uses music as a powerful tool to re-engage students, providing an alternative pathway that addresses underlying needs and prevents further escalation.
