The sculpture is made from over 100,000 seized blades and was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour and a critical need for social change.
As part of bringing the Knife Angel alive, The Music Works worked with a group of young people whose lives have been impacted by knife crime and violence. For three months, they wrote and produced music and sounds in response to the sculpture. The result was a series of hugely thought provoking spoken word and rap pieces over tracks they produced themselves.
To launch the Knife Angel coming to Gloucester, the young people performed their music in front of a live audience of key stakeholders, friends and family. Watch a snapshot of the event below
To capture the positivity and maximise on the potential of the 40,000 people that visited the installation of the Kinfe Angel, The Music Works set about raising money to continue to work with the young people on their journey of turning their lives around.
The continuation of the work has seen the group of 6 artists, now named ‘G-Coda’, collaborate and attend a series of workshops supporting them to promote, release and launch their very own album ‘Lights Out’ released February 2024 exactly a year on from when the sculpture arrived in Gloucester.
