Josie’s story - TheMusicWorks

I was never a musical person growing up…and even in music lessons I never liked it. I just never thought I was good at any music.

Josie didn’t grow up thinking music was “her thing.” Even in school music lessons, she never felt confident or particularly interested in it. She just assumed it wasn’t something she was good at.

That started to change when she joined our Key Changes programme.

She began with one-to-one sessions, trying things out and slowly getting more comfortable. From there, she moved into a group, where she started experimenting more, playing songs on the drums and beginning to sing for the first time.

What started as something she never expected to do, soon became something she was actively creating. Josie is now working on her own original music, developing her sound and using it as a way to express herself.

I basically wrote a poem in physics class and I ended up releasing it. I’d never sung before that, and it turns out I was a good singer.

Since coming to The Music Works, Josie has noticed big changes in herself, not just musically, but personally too. Her confidence and self-esteem have grown, and she’s started to feel more comfortable being seen and heard. Even small things, like posting photos of herself online without filters, have become part of that shift.

For Josie, music has become a way to say things she couldn’t always put into words. It’s a space to process thoughts and feelings, but also to connect with others who might feel the same.

Music is really important to me because I can express myself in a way that I can get across my thoughts and feelings… and maybe just make some other people feel not so alone.

When asked what she would say to someone thinking about getting involved with The Music Works, she says:

I love it and I think everyone else should give it a go. There’s quite a few programmes that you can get involved in. Even if they don’t think they’re a musical person, just give it a shot. You never know.

Josie’s story shows how quickly confidence can grow when young people are given the chance to try something new without judgement. From never seeing herself as “musical” to creating and releasing her own song, she has discovered abilities she didn’t know she had. Her journey is a reminder that sometimes all it takes is the space to try.

Your support can help more young people change their future through music.
