I actually have depression and before this I was in a really bad place…this has just like done a total 360 on my life.
Adam was struggling with his mental health and describes being in a very difficult place in his life.
When he joined our Mix & Mash programme, he found a creative space that felt different to anything else around him. Somewhere he could explore music, express himself freely, and try things he never normally would.
He describes it simply, but clearly: it’s a space that opens things up for him.
I’ve been able to do a lot of the things that I can’t do around my area and I’ve been able to express myself in ways that I’ve never really thought were possible.
For Adam, music isn’t just something to do, it’s something that changes how he feels. On difficult days, it gives him somewhere to go with those emotions. He explains how important that release is for him:
“If I’m having a bad day, I can just come in here and I can sing about how I feel and it makes me feel a lot better. It kind of gives me a sense of purpose and a bit of pride in my craft and what I do.”
What stands out for Adam is the freedom of coming to Mix & Mash. The ability to move between different creative rooms, try new things, or just take part in what feels right in the moment, without pressure or restriction.
Adam is also open about his mental health and the impact The Music Works has had on him:
I actually do have depression and before this I was really in a bad place…this has just like done a full 360 on my life. I’m just so happy that I can finally express myself through music and through creative arts… I can finally relax and just be my authentic self.
When asked what she would say to someone thinking about getting involved with The Music Works, he says:
It doesn’t matter what type of disability you’ve got… everyone is welcome here. And they’re so nice and welcoming… and I’m really grateful for it.
Adam’s story shows the importance of inclusive creative spaces where young people can express themselves in their own way. Music has given him a sense of purpose, release, and pride, as well as a place where he feels accepted and able to be himself. His experience highlights how creativity can support wellbeing, confidence, and self-expression.
Mix and Mash is an amazing week of music-making for young people in Gloucestershire with additional needs.
